Born and raised in London, Asli joined our Manchester team in 2023 having recently graduated from the University of Manchester where she studied Politics and Modern History. Asli is a culture-lover and feeds her activism in race relations, social change and grassroots organising through books, film and art.
‘If we want a beloved community, we must stand for justice, have recognition for difference without attaching difference to privilege.’ – bell hooks
Asli has been using her voice to provoke change throughout her education, starting in her school where she was able to gather over 300 signatures on an open letter highlighting the lack of support for Black students and making recommendations on how to improve. The letter kickstarted her school’s anti-racism training programme for all staff.
Her activism continued into her university career where, alongside her studies, she became the Deputy Chair of the UoM Feminist Collective and participated in the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Civil Leadership Programme, tackling racial inequalities in many areas of civic and public life. She brings this passion for activism to her role at We Belong, where she looks forward to developing strong relationships with the Manchester community.
